In 2005 I was fortunate enough to stumble on a 35 year woodworking vetran who had become too elderly to continue in his craft. As an aspiring furniture maker he gave me an unbelievable deal on almost the entirety of his shop and tools. As a result I finally now have a full featured shop and enjoy creating furniture for friends and family as well as teaching others how to work with wood. Below are some selected photographs of recent pieces, additional photos can be found in the galleries.
In 2003 I started a company called Common Futures Research as a side project to keep me involved with the real world while I endulged my academic tendancies in graduate school at the University of Utah. 5 years later things are running smoothly and I have to dedicate very little of my time to keep them that way.
I am currently completing my PhD dissertation related to computer architecture. My general research area focuses on how future technology scaling should be leveraged to achieve high performance while minimizing energy expenditure. Most operating system code performs terribly on modern processors (in comparison to user code), which is a major performance limitation for applications like web-servers and databases.
I enjoy photography as a relaxing hobby that can inspire me to travel and witness events I might otherwise not be as motivated to participate in. In the digital age too many people rely on an abundance of photographs and forget many memories made throughout their life. I believe photographs should be used as a tool to help recall the feelings and experiences that were happening when the camera shutter opened, not as substitution for those feelings.
I enjoy both working on and racing on things powered by engines. I'm fascinated to no end with tuning and tweaking them for performance and comfort. Right now I spend most of my time working on a '04 Toyota Tacoma and a '03 KTM 300exc. Every November I go to the desert outside Laughlin, NV for a week or so over Thanksgiving to enjoy some time in wild heaven which helps me get my gearhead fix.
